Masia
Off-grid vacation home

The design, realized by MIXD, provides for a self-sufficient home where rainwater is collected, all wastewater is reused, and energy is generated using solar panels.

In accordance with local requirements regarding integration into the landscape, original and circular materials are used as much as possible. Due to termites, a combination of prefabricated concrete beams and ceramic elements was chosen for the floor construction.

The building permit for this off-grid refuge/retreat in a former harvest barn/stable, located in the rural surroundings of Aragon, Spain, was issued at the end of 2019.

Self-sufficiency

The project was a study of sustainability, self-sufficiency, and (unexpectedly) irony: the announcement in January 2020 of the possible arrival of a wind farm with 84 turbines, each 190 meters high, which will completely ridicule the careful integration into the landscape… The conflict of our time summarised in the iconic image of the epic battle against the windmills, so characteristic of Don Quixote.
