MIXD @ MAAK
studio@maakhaven

This self-built studio is a workshop with office part, built mainly from residual materials with fixed dimensions. Designing with residual materials therefore requires an inventive design strategy.

Double glazing derived from homes (‘waste’) was applied as an insulating and transparent ceiling finish. Through correct positioning of the glazing, a space-wide ceiling surface was realized suspended from steel pipes, originating from the gas piping system from the building.

Brown residual strips of plywood sheet material (waste from interior industries) were used as cladding vertically or horizontally, according to width (39 or 49 cm). The stair stringers are also composed of these strips.

The reflection of both the glass and the satin sheen of the concrete plywood gives the interior a surprisingly spacious feel. This feature is enhanced by the placement of a mirror, a nod to the design of Adolf Loos’ Kärntner bar.

The rejected rubber covering of transfer rollers from printing industries (a scratch means rejection) was applied as floor covering.
